Reining in Online Influencers: The Emerging Role of Strangers in Health Care Decisions

Everyone's an expert online. Armchair doctor wannabes are doling out diagnoses faster than the time it takes to update Facebook or post on Twitter. But who's vetting this advice? When bad information goes viral it not only may be dangerous, it can also create a huge liability for consumers and healthcare organizations. In this session, Karen Albritton, President of Capstrat, Gayle Tuttle Director, Strategic Communications for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Katie Ratchford of Carolinas Healthcare will address the idea of crowdsourcing medical information, the effect it's having on the patient-doctor relationship and what it could mean for the business of health care.

The Panel

Karen Albritton is president of Capstrat, a communications agency in Raleigh, NC providing public relations, marketing public relations, public affairs and digital services. She oversees Capstrat’s operations and is a central figure in the firm’s strategy, management and recruitment.

With an uncanny ability to study a problem and see immediate opportunities, Karen has a knack for finding real solutions that work for clients. She combines a constant pursuit for excellence and tenacious competitiveness with strategic insight and broad industry experience. Karen has a firm grasp on the fundamental ins and outs of the communications business — and a keen sense for its rapidly changing landscape. Karen has proved integral in launching new services at Capstrat – digital in 2001 and engagement marketing in 2007.

Karen stays involved in the community by serving on several boards of directors, including the NCBioScience Industry, Triangle Chapter of the American Marketing Association and Wake Education Partnership. Karen earned her B.A. in journalism and political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gayle Tuttle is Director of Strategic Communications at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC). There she is responsible for the company's major communications initiatives, social media strategy and implementation; and for trying new things - HealthCampRDU, blog talk radio. Prior to her career with BCBSNC she owned and operated Perigee Healthcare Services, Inc. a healthcare data abstraction firm. Before that she worked as a newspaper reporter covering politics, the plight of humanity and eventually Congress and the White House. Gayle is a graduate of East Carolina University.

Katie Ratchford is a public relations specialist with Carolinas HealthCare System.  She joined the organization in May 2008 after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Katie is primarily responsible for promoting the Faculty physicians at Carolinas Medical Center, the flagship hospital of Carolinas Healthcare, and manages and oversees the social media pages for the organization.

Katie is also responsible for day-to-day communications with the local and regional media to proactively promote CHS, and respond to media requests for interviews with leadership, physicians, staff and patients.  She also assists her team with crisis management and response, special events planning, and executive communications.
